Hardcore “Soulslike” in Napoleonic Times — 30 Minutes of Valor Mortis Gameplay from the Creators of Ghostrunner

Playtests have begun for Valor Mortis, the new title from Polish studio One More Level, best known for the hit Ghostrunner. Players are now able to preview a portion of the gameplay.

A more-than-30-minute video of an early build has appeared online, running on Unreal Engine 5 with an RTX 5090 in 4K. Early impressions are positive: viewers highlight the impressive visuals, brooding atmosphere, and a demanding combat system that evokes Witchfire, Dark Souls, and Sekiro.

Valor Mortis is a first-person soulslike in which you take control of William, a soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée who has been brought back from death and infected by a mysterious plague. The game unfolds in an alternate 19th-century Europe amid ruins and battlefields populated by mutated monsters. The developers promise a combat system featuring parries, dodges, brutal finishers, and supernatural abilities tied to the hero’s curse.

The new footage showcases not only encounters with monsters but also the character’s agility and the fast-paced combat reminiscent of Ghostrunner. The developers stress that every death is a lesson: players gain new abilities and learn to make better use of their powers.
