GTA 6 Trailer Sparks Surge in Streams, Pre-Orders, and Console Sales
Netflix
For streaming giant Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look marked a first-of-its-kind experience because the platform had never showcased a video game before.
Rockstar Games came up with the idea to bring the showcase to Netflix, recognizing that the platform would allow the company to reach a much broader audience.
On its very first day, the 27-minute video topped the charts in numerous countries worldwide, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Brazil, and South Africa, and it remains in the top 10 today.
The unprecedented demand initially overwhelmed the servers and caused a crash, leaving the service unavailable for roughly 40 to 50 minutes. Sensor Tower analysts calculated that:
- Netflix user base increased by 35% during the first hour of the premiere and by 50% compared with the previous day;
- mobile app usage increased by 50%, while the web version saw a 125% increase.
Official figures state that:
- during the week of August 24–30, which accounted for just four days following the August 27 broadcast, the video generated 31.1 million views to take the number-one title ahead of the second-place entry with 23.2 million;
- it took the top spot in 87 out of 93 countries.
Netflix counts views differently from YouTube. YouTube registers a view simply when a video is played, whereas the subscription streaming service requires viewers to watch the entire video.
YouTube
Six hours after its debut behind the paywall, the extended showcase became available for free. Although the initial hype had slowed down and deep night hours in many regions meant people were asleep, YouTube numbers reached:
- 5 million views in 1 day;
- 17 million views in 4 days;
- 25 million views in 9 days, alongside 1.5 million likes.
These figures remain modest compared to the first two trailers, which collectively approached 500 million views. However, the length and pure gameplay nature of the video still represent solid numbers.
Streaming Platforms
Twitch, YouTube, Kick, and similar platforms experienced issues due to a massive influx of viewers. Streamers were allowed to rebroadcast the extended showcase as long as their streams included analysis or a reaction. In a single day:
- total watch time reached 5.2 million hours;
- peak viewership reached 4 million people;
- around 9,000 channels rebroadcast the premiere.
Live chat discussions recorded:
- more than 100,000 messages:
Music
All 15 tracks featured during An Extended Look triggered streaming growth across music services.
Spotify reported figures achieved in less than a week:
- Captain & Tennille — But I Think It’s A Dream streams increased by 130,730%, and playlist additions grew by 885,400%;
- Chimbala x Omega — Se Me Nota (Agarrame) increased by 10,190%;
- !!!, Mean Pace — Off The Grid increased by 5,720%;
- Aluna & Jayda G — Mine O’ Mine increased by 2,570%;
- Cliff Richard — Devil Woman increased by 1,290%;
- Elderbrook with Bob Moses — Inner Light increased by 1,070% for streams and 4,155% for playlist additions;
- Prefab Sprout — Cars and Girls increased by 360%;
- Depeche Mode — People Are People increased by 190% for streams and 700% for playlist additions;
- Birdman ft. Lil Wayne — Pop Bottles increased by 115%;
- The Bellamy Brothers — Let Your Love Flow increased by 80%.
Devil Woman, Inner Light, and Se Me Nota entered the Shazam top 10 most-searched tracks, registering over one million searches in a single week.
Pre-Orders
Sensor Tower’s sale tracker details the spike in pre-orders driven by the surge in interest.
- PS5 pre-orders jumped from around 10,000 per day to 140,000 immediately after the premiere.
- Xbox Series X/S pre-orders normally reach 10,000 over one or two days, but that Thursday alone brought in 50,000.
Pre-order numbers later returned to normal levels, bringing the total to 4.93 million. Total revenue is estimated at $482 million.
Consoles
Console hardware sales also saw a boost in the UK, where weekly sales increased by:
- 33% for PS5;
- 34% for Xbox Series X/S.
These gains remain insufficient to offset the broader market decline in console sales caused by high prices and rising component costs.
