Grace Under Fire: How Vetle Nærø Improvised When His Instruments Got Lost at the Airport

According to musical lore, Niccolò Paganini once completed an entire violin masterpiece on a solitary string after his others snapped in succession. Whether that feat was a masterclass in theatrical showmanship or a testament to sheer, unadulterated genius remains a subject of debate among historians centuries later.

Norwegian composer Vetle Nærø recently experienced his own unforgettable trial by fire that would have made the legendary virtuoso proud.

Earlier this month, the neo-classical artist captivated audiences with an intimate piano performance as a featured guest at the 2026 Bergtatt Festival. That spellbinding mid-morning recital inside Luster’s historic Dale Church—a sacred architectural marvel dating back to the early 13th century—turned into an entirely acoustic affair through pure misfortune.

“My performance was originally designed to be an electronic set featuring my synthesizers and specific gear,” Nærø shares in an interview. “Unfortunately, the airline misplaced my luggage and equipment. I had no choice but to completely reimagine the set on the spot and return entirely to the acoustic piano.”

True to the adage, the show went on magnificently. His breathtaking improvisation and heartfelt words moved members of the intimate audience to tears of profound joy. Cultivating an atmosphere of stillness and genuine human connection, he notes, is the ultimate driving force behind his artistry.

Thankfully, his missing equipment has since been safely recovered and reunited with its creator.

Born in Oslo in 2000 and raised amidst the dramatic landscapes of Ålesund, Nærø immersed himself in classical piano from an early age, drawing heavy inspiration from the timeless works of Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninoff. By age nine, he had already discovered the pioneering architects of musical minimalism, including Philip Glass and Arvo Part. Before fully embracing his solo path, he explored various sonic territories, leading a jazz trio and dipping his toes into electronic music production.

His debut studio album, By Heart, emerged as a spontaneous, single-day recording project in 2018. It was followed by Introspection in 2021 and From Moments in 2023. Most recently, his critically praised album All Moments Must Pass arrived in May 2025 via Piano & Coffee Records.

Looking ahead, the visionary composer is already laying the groundwork for his fifth studio album, slated for release in 2027.

“It is shaping up to be a monumental project, far grander in scope than anything I have created before,” he hints. “I am incredibly fortunate to collaborate with extraordinary individuals who truly believe in my creative vision.”
