According to the main points of the patent, it’s for a “game controller that provides notifications for a game invitation, a chat message, an indication that a user’s high score has been beaten, or the like,” which might be displayed as both an audio or visible cue.

Taking it a step additional, it seems just like the controller might be appropriate with various units from TVs, to smartphones, to tablets. Users can select on which gadget to launch the app that they acquired the notification from.
