Godzilla Returns in Shocking New Trailer for 2026’s Godzilla Minus Zero

The King of the Monsters is poised for a terrifying comeback later this year. Following the monumental success of 2023’s Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One, the upcoming sequel Godzilla Minus Zero promises to further explore the harrowing aftermath of post-war Tokyo. The narrative picks up with the survivors of the original ordeal, focusing on the Shikishima family as they confront a monstrous new reality.

<p>On Thursday, Toho and distributor GKIDS unveiled a chilling new trailer, offering a closer look at Takashi Yamazaki’s ambitious vision. The footage suggests that as the creature re-emerges, desperate authorities may resort to the unthinkable, including the deployment of thermonuclear weaponry to halt the beast. "Another moral boundary mankind should not cross," a character warns, only for an enraged Godzilla to seemingly respond to the threat with catastrophic force.</p>

<p>The sequel welcomes Min Tanaka (<em>Perfect Days</em>, <em>47 Ronin</em>) to the ensemble, playing Kanji Murakami, a biologist burdened by the trauma of war. He joins returning cast members Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, and Hidetaka Yoshioka—the latter of whom now leads the Disaster Response Bureau. Other returning favorites include Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Mio Tanaka.</p>

<p>Previous teasers have showcased a more formidable, menacing iteration of Godzilla, hinting at a global scale that pushes past Japan and reaches the shores of New York City. This marks the monster's first significant appearance in the Big Apple since the 1998 adaptation, though this version is unlikely to be a guest anyone welcomes.</p>

<p>Takashi Yamazaki returns to helm the project as writer, director, and visual effects supervisor. <em>Godzilla Minus Zero</em> arrives in Japanese theaters on Nov. 3 and is slated for a North American debut on Nov. 6. Notably, this production holds the distinction of being the first Japanese film ever captured for IMAX using proprietary high-definition digital cameras.</p>
