The God of War saga expands into uncharted territory with a newly unveiled prequel centered on Faye—the frost giant matriarch and mother to Atreus. Following her quiet passing in the 2018 installment, players are finally granted a glimpse into her untold journey through a captivating 23-minute gameplay reveal.
Picking up immediately after her funeral rites, the narrative follows Laufey as she awakens within an ethereal, alien forest. Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil: Born Again) returns to lend her voice and performance to the character, who must now navigate “The Everywhen,” a surreal afterlife dimension teeming with divine entities and otherworldly threats.
According to official PlayStation Store documentation, the stakes are deeply personal: Faye discovers that the intricate safeguards she established to protect Kratos and Atreus from beyond the grave are beginning to fracture. To secure her family’s future, she must confront gods from various pantheons currently vying for control of the Everywhen.
The gameplay strikes a compelling balance between elegance and intensity. Faye utilizes a fluid, one-handed sword style that allows for rapid aerial juggling, seamlessly complemented by powerful frost-based magical abilities. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she is captured, only to be liberated by a charismatic—and talkative—gelatinous cube housing a mystical blade. Voiced by Jack Quaid, this quirky companion, Phranque, serves as a vital ally in her quest.
While the combat retains the signature over-the-shoulder intimacy and visceral weight of Kratos’ Norse adventures, the visual direction of God of War: Laufey leans into a dreamlike, whimsical aesthetic that starkly contrasts with the brutal, grounded tone of its predecessors.
Currently in development for PlayStation 5, God of War: Laufey does not yet have a confirmed release date. This project arrives alongside the previously announced God of War Trilogy Remake, signaling a massive period of growth for Santa Monica Studio’s flagship franchise.
