Ghost of Yotei Impressed the Creators of Nioh, Rise of the Ronin, and Dragon’s Dogma
Team Ninja director Fumihiko Yasuda and the creator of Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma, Hideaki Itsuno, shared their thoughts on the new game at the Archipel Caravan Game event.
Yasuda — known for his work on Nioh and Rise of the Ronin — said he’s been enjoying Ghost of Yōtei. He confessed he’s long wanted to craft a title set on Hokkaido, much like the Sucker Punch project, and noted that his hometown’s proximity to Tsushima Island makes both entries in the Ghost series feel particularly personal to him.
Itsuno added that he hasn’t had a chance to play Ghost of Yōtei yet, but everything he’s seen in the trailers has left a strong impression.
Studio head Brian Fleming stated he doesn’t envision the series expanding beyond Japan. “At its core, Ghost is about a person wielding a katana,” he explained. “Transposing it to a European setting wouldn’t make sense to us.”
Fleming emphasized that Japan’s natural beauty is central to the series’ identity. “It will remain an open-world experience rooted in the katana and the spirit of Japanese nature,” he said. “While developers may explore different eras, they won’t stray from that foundation.”
Art director Joanna Van noted that the color yellow became a defining element of Ghost of Yōtei’s visual language, playing a key role in the game’s compositions.
