Gaming Industry Hit by 8 Sharp Price Hikes for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Over the Past 6 Months
The gaming industry is continuing to raise prices for hardware, software, and services. Over the past six months, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo have implemented eight major price increases, affecting the PS5, Xbox Series S|X, Xbox Game Pass, and various other services.
Consoles and games were cheaper in earlier years, but costs have risen sharply recently. The deteriorating global economic environment casts doubt on the affordability of gaming and its broad appeal.
Some of the most notable changes:
- Xbox Game Pass price increase
- Price hikes for Xbox Series S|X (twice)
- PlayStation Plus price rise
- PS5 price increase
- Revised pricing for Nintendo Switch 2 accessories
- Nintendo Switch price increase
- New $80 benchmark for AAA games
Xbox drew criticism after two sharp price hikes for the Series S|X, pushing the Series X to about $650. Game Pass Ultimate jumped 50% to $30 per month. Nintendo set an $80 price for a AAA title for the first time (Mario Kart World) and raised Switch 2 accessory prices by $5–$10, while the console itself increased by $30–$50. The PS5 went up by $50, with Sony offering base models featuring reduced storage. PS Plus subscription costs rose across 15 countries.
As a result, console gaming has become more expensive on every platform, and further increases are possible—especially for subscription services and new releases.
