Epic Games has officially announced their move to eliminate square thumbnails from the Fortnite Discover section.

First introduced as a trial feature in March 2024, square thumbnails have not appeared in-game for quite some time. Epic swiftly reverted the change due to unfavorable player feedback, which likened it to Roblox’s style. Despite this, creators were asked to submit square versions of their rectangular thumbnails during the publishing process, leading many to speculate about a potential return of the feature. In a recent announcement on 𝕏, Fortnite’s Creator account posted the following update:
Island publishing no longer requires Square Thumbnails 📣
We experimented with them in Discover to assess if displaying more tiles would enhance engagement, but we did not observe a significant rise, so we’re sticking with rectangles!
