In December 2020, the legendary Halo’s Master Chief was introduced to Fortnite’s ‘Gaming Legends’ series, accompanied by a special, Xbox-exclusive Matte Black Style. This unique Style was available to those who owned the Outfit and logged in on an Xbox Series X|S. Although designed for Xbox, Epic had assured players through an official X announcement that there was “no deadline for unlocking the Style”.

Today, four years later, as Master Chief reappeared in the Item Shop, players observed the absence of the special Matte Black Style upon logging in via Xbox. In an unexpected and unusual post made three hours subsequent to the Shop update, Epic disclosed, “The Matte Black Style for The Master Chief is no longer available for unlocking. This Style is now limited to players who acquired the Outfit and engaged in gameplay on an Xbox Series X|S before December 2024.”

Prior to the recent Winterfest update, Outfit owners could still log into Xbox and secure the free Matte Black Style, prompting speculation about the abrupt cessation of this offer. Curiously, Epic did not address their four-year-old assertion that the Style could be unlocked “at any point in the future” but instead, proceeded to offer refunds to affected players.

As of now, Epic has not offered further explanations regarding this change. Stay tuned for more updates.
