Jeff Kaplan Reveals Kintsugiyama’s Debut Title: The Legend of California
After a storied tenure at Blizzard Entertainment, Jeff Kaplan—the creative force and former lead director of Overwatch—is returning to the forefront of game development. Kaplan departed Blizzard in 2021 amidst internal friction regarding monetization mandates and potential staffing cuts, as he recently detailed in a candid conversation with PC Gamer. Since then, he has spearheaded his own independent studio, Kintsugiyama, which has finally unveiled its first major project.
Pivoting away from the high-concept sci-fi and fantasy worlds that defined his earlier career, Kaplan’s new venture, The Legend of California, is an open-world survival shooter. The game transports players to a stylized version of the 19th-century Gold Rush era, blending historical grit with mythical overtones.
Set within the “mythical Island of California,” the experience emphasizes resourcefulness and strategic competition. Players can brave the wilderness solo or collaborate with up to three companions to scavenge for vital materials. While the game features classic survival mechanics—such as harvesting timber for shelter—it also introduces high-stakes tactical encounters where players can raid enemy-controlled outposts for wealth. The persistent online environment offers deep progression systems, allowing pioneers to establish their own ranches, maintain stables, and explore labyrinthine mines.

The Legend of California is currently scheduled to launch via Steam Early Access in 2026.
