Finally, a Hardcore FPS with Permanent Progression That Respects Our Time
Wardogs, the highly anticipated first-person shooter from developer Bulkhead, is far more than your typical lobby-based arena game. Beneath its core premise—100-player battles for map dominance—lies a complex ecosystem featuring an intricate cash-driven metagame, tiered progression systems, seasonal economic resets, and a golden currency. While CEO Joe Brammer knows that dedicated “hardcore” players will find plenty to sink their teeth into, he is equally focused on ensuring the game remains welcoming for those with less time to grind.

In an exclusive interview, Brammer noted that while Wardogs shares some DNA with the high-stakes intensity of Escape From Tarkov, he intentionally avoided the "wipe" mechanics that define that genre. He prefers the accessibility of competitive shooters like Valorant, where the barrier to entry is low and the focus remains on immediate, pick-up-and-play action.

"You are always moving forward in Wardogs," Brammer explains, noting that the game's economy is central to its progression. When seasons cycle, accumulated cash converts into gold bars, which can be spent on exclusive cosmetic skins. Because these items cannot be purchased with real-world money, they serve as a status symbol representing pure skill and time investment. This design choice ensures that even players who may not dominate the scoreboard can still show off their dedication through earned prestige.

While the bank balance resets, your character’s fundamental growth does not. Progression mirrors the skill-based training seen in titles like RuneScape; as you perform specific actions, you level up your proficiency in roles like sniping, healing, or piloting. "A sniper with years of experience will hold their breath longer and stabilize their aim faster than a novice," Brammer says.

He emphasizes that these advantages are marginal, meant to reward long-term investment rather than create an insurmountable gap. "We're talking about minor percentage differences. It isn't so drastic that a fresh recruit couldn't take down a veteran. It’s simply the evolution from a 'war dog' to a 'war lord.'"

This design philosophy is born from the studio's history with Battalion 1944. After that arena shooter found unexpected success, the team struggled to manage the community backlash and the pressures of rapid growth. "We realized that players were gifting us their time and their hard-earned money," Brammer reflects. "We learned that we have an obligation to respect that commitment."

Ultimately, Wardogs is a direct result of those early lessons. By valuing persistence and ensuring that player achievements are never truly erased, Bulkhead aims to foster a more sustainable community. As the game moves through its pre-alpha phase, it promises a deeper level of agency—including opportunities for players to act as arms dealers and market traders—ahead of its Early Access launch later this year.
