Final Fantasy VII Remake Game Director Advises Players to Accept Key Cards on Switch 2
They concern more than just price and storage capacity, says Naoki Hamaguchi
In an interview with JP Games, Naoki Hamaguchi — who served in leadership roles on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — addressed Square Enix’s decision to release Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade as a key-card product and responded to criticism of that format.
Hamaguchi acknowledged players’ dissatisfaction but clarified that, contrary to some beliefs, key-cards aren’t used merely to cut cartridge costs or to work around 64 GB limits. The principal reason is the read-speed constraints of cartridges, which can make delivering much of the game via digital download a more efficient approach.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on January 22, 2026.
