Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Doubts Scale of Remake Can Be Repeated
Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi believes that a massive remake of this scale is unlikely to happen again because dividing the project into three games was an immense creative and business risk.
In an interview with Final Weapon, Hamaguchi stated that he finds it difficult to imagine another game receiving such a large-scale multi-part remake. According to him, the scope was necessary from a creative standpoint, although the decision remained extremely risky from a business perspective.
The director asks:
If the first part had sold very poorly and received bad reviews, what would we have done with the rest of the games?
Another major challenge was keeping a nearly identical core team together across all three projects. Hamaguchi called this “another huge headache,” particularly for the company’s management.
In the director’s opinion, few studios would take on a similar risk today. Against the backdrop of growing AAA game budgets, the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy stands out for its scale and consistency, despite the reuse of certain assets.
