During the Tokyo Game Show last week, I went hands-on with Final Fantasy VII Revelation, spending roughly 25 minutes exploring the opening chapter. You can dive deeper into my initial impressions here, where I break down the narrative direction and share my thoughts on the innovative FITS mechanic. Beyond the gameplay, I also sat down with game director Naoki Hamaguchi to discuss the graphical configurations featured in the PlayStation 5 Pro build. Inspecting the visual menu beforehand, I spotted three distinct presets: “Quality,” “Performance – Sharp,” and “Performance – Soft.”

Naturally, the Quality mode prioritizes maximum resolution, likely targeting a steadfast 30 frames per second, though I couldn’t independently verify this limitation during the demo. Meanwhile, the Sharp and Soft performance options return from post-launch updates seen in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, granting players tailored control over their 60 FPS experience on the PS5 Pro. True to its predecessor, the Smooth performance preset maintains a steady 60 FPS while favoring a softer visual presentation, whereas the Sharp option preserves that same fluid framerate alongside enhanced clarity. While comprehensive testing beyond a brief demo will be necessary to judge the final product, the game looked stunning in motion and maintained a remarkably consistent 60 FPS throughout my playthrough.

Hamaguchi noted that discerning players will notice subtle distinctions between these modes when inspecting fine details like character hair, environmental density, and lighting shadows.

Furthermore, during the event, Hamaguchi shared on X that the PS5 Pro will utilize PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology to power a dedicated mode combining pristine 4K fidelity with smooth 60 FPS performance, though the exact moniker for this setting wasn’t specified. Curiously, I didn’t spot this particular option in the demo’s menus—whether due to the whirlwind nature of convention floors or its omission from the preview build remains unclear.

It is worth mentioning that because this specific hands-on session ran on the PS5 Pro hardware, Square Enix has yet to confirm which of these graphical modes will transition over to the standard PlayStation 5 console. Even so, if Rebirth serves as any indication, fans can likely expect the core trio of settings—excluding the PSSR-exclusive mode—to be fully supported.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to officially launch on April 8, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
