By taking this approach, he aims to draw attention to the issue and prompt changes within the industry.

Gamers have recently taken note of a specific lawsuit in China. The father of a gamer suffering from gaming addiction has filed a lawsuit against several Chinese gaming companies, demanding a symbolic compensation of 10 yuan (about $1.50). His goal is not money; he is driven by a different motive. He wants to bring attention to the problem of gaming addiction and force companies to combat it.

Shandian News reports that a father named Qin has sued prominent companies such as Tencent, NetEase, 37 Interactive Entertainment, and miHoYo (HoYoverse).

Qin shared that his son has been passionate about video games for several years, frequently staying up until 3:00 or 4:00 AM on weekends. Data from one gaming platform showed that the younger Qin spent roughly 1,868 hours in a game starting in March 2024, meaning he played for an average of more than two hours per day.

Qin explained that he bought a mobile phone for his son to stay in constant contact with him because he works in another city. According to regulations, minors are only permitted to play from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. However, the younger Qin bypassed the system by using his adult sister’s information to register.

The father holds gaming companies responsible for failing to fulfill their obligations to verify player identities. Qin stated that he hopes the court will compel companies to execute their duties in preventing gaming addiction:

I hope the court proceedings will be held in an open format to shed light on the management shortcomings in this industry. I will do everything in my power to protect my son’s rights. Games have had a devastating impact on the children of this generation. If I do not stand up for my child’s rights, I do not deserve to be called a parent.
