During a game of “True Confessions” with Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers on Wednesday’s (June 16) Tonight Show, Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy shared her Chris Martin super-duper fan story. Sure, Jimmy’s been friends with Coldplay for more than 20 years and he has fond memories of hanging with the lads, but when it comes to Martin-mania, Murphy’s got him beat, no sweat.
Actually, forget that last part. During the game in which contestants try to convince their competitors that their outrageous stories are true, Murphy’s tale was so super weird it had to be a lie. “I once licked Chris Martin’s sweat off my own hand,” the star of the new dark AMC comedy Kevin Can F— Himself proclaimed.
Both men looked on incredulously, asking if it was at a concert, in which case Fallon said all three are probably guilty of the same act. “Get in line!” they said in unison as Murphy laughed. She claimed she had all-access seats to the pre-fame gig a decade ago, and proved her Coldplay superfan bona fides by — kind of — naming a few of their hits.
“I was actually about three rows deep,” she said, describing how she got close to the singer as he was working the crowd, forcing eye contact. She said she reached out to him, secured the sweat and then quickly licked it off.
Asked a dubioius Meyers, “So you were worried something would happen … security would run over and wipe the sweat off?”
She admitted that her friends looked at her with a mix of “pride and disgust” after the lick, perhaps out of jealousy. That wasn’t the only Coldplay spotting of the show, though, as the band appeared later in the episode to perform the acoustic version of their current single, “Higher Power.”
Murphy also dished on her Schitt’s Creek catchphrase, “Ew, David!,” during her chat with Fallon. Though the utterance is wildly popular, according to the actress, she didn’t actually say it that often on the show. “I just found out recently, some woman told us that I only actually say ‘Ew, David’ twice in the entire series,” she shared. “But I also said ‘Ugh, David’ or like, ‘Why, David?’ … I tacked ‘David’ on to whatever I possibly could. This ‘Ew, David’ thing spiraled out of control.”
