During a recent three-hour exclusive preview event in Paris, we sat down with the developers behind Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse to pull back the curtain on its production. Beyond the fascinating details regarding the collaborative partnership between Evil Empire and Konami, we were eager to address a growing concern in the gaming industry: the role of generative AI.

To put it simply: the game was crafted entirely by human hands, with no generative AI tools utilized in its creation.

We spoke with a trio of key figures: Konami producer Tsutomu Taniguchi, alongside Evil Empire’s marketing director Bérenger Dupré and creative director Emmanuel Nouaille. When asked directly about their usage of AI, the response was clear.

“From Konami’s perspective, we haven’t utilized any AI,” Taniguchi explained. “While we remain uncertain about what the future holds for the technology, we haven’t adopted any formal stance on its use within our projects.”

While Dupré lightheartedly admitted to using AI tools to assist with his English correspondence, the team maintained a firm boundary regarding the game’s actual development.

“To address the game itself: no AI,” Nouaille added. “It was a vital decision for our team, our fans, and the industry at large. We believe in authentic, human-led creation. Our goal is to inject our own soul into this project. I have no personal quarrel with AI, but for our craft and for this title, there is no place for it.”
