Eight Years In, Deltarune Reaches Surprising New Milestones

It is easy to lose track of time given the significant gaps between installments, but make no mistake: Deltarune remains a cultural powerhouse. When Chapter 5 of Toby Fox’s episodic RPG series debuted on June 24, it obliterated previous records, drawing in a staggering 291,816 concurrent players on Steam. Beyond the PC platform, the game continues to find a massive audience on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

To put that figure in perspective, it places Deltarune firmly within the top five of Steam’s most-played titles—an impressive feat for a narrative-driven experience competing against industry-standard live-service games and repetitive grind-heavy titles.

Furthermore, the franchise hit a historic milestone: Toby Fox officially cracked the Billboard charts. The tracks “Flower Man” and “Cutie Mew Mew Magic” secured the 13th and 18th positions, respectively, on the Hot Dance/Electronic charts. While previous scores had appeared on Billboard’s soundtrack rankings, this marks the first instance where Fox’s individual songs have charted, putting him in league with luminaries like Tame Impala. Kudos to both Toby and collaborator Camellia for the achievement, as the full soundtrack reached No. 3 on the Soundtracks chart and No. 5 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums list.

Both Undertale and Deltarune are renowned for their iconic soundtracks—after all, “Megalovania” was famously performed in the presence of the Pope. Chapter 5 has introduced a new wave of internet fervor, largely fueled by its captivating musical motifs. “Flower Man” serves as the theme for Flowery, a character reincarnated from a flower into an anime-inspired figure whose journey from a cynical antagonist to a reliable ally is underscored by the “power of friendship.” A charming quirk of his character is his habit of spouting bizarre, non-sequitur audio clips like “Glue!” that often defy his actual dialogue.

The track’s popularity has soared thanks to its internal lyrical themes, which have inspired a flurry of talented fan-made covers.

Meanwhile, “Cutie Mew Mew Magic”—the theme for the chapter’s hidden boss—features a delightful and unexpected appearance by Hatsune Miku. This Vocaloid-infused track has since spawned numerous covers featuring other virtual idols, most notably Kasane Teto.

The chapter has also become a goldmine for memes, thanks to compelling new characters like the combative Aqua and her intellectual pseudo-sibling, Seth. The community’s engagement has been prolific, with everything from fan-made tribute animations to fighting game mods that integrate these new additions.
