Eddie Murphy to Receive AFI Honor

Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy — best known for Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America — will be presented with a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute (AFI).

“Eddie Murphy is an American icon. A pioneer across film, television and stand-up comedy, his versatility knows no bounds. For five decades his enduring impact on our culture has inspired both fellow creators and audiences,” said Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the organization’s board of trustees.

Murphy will be the fourth Black recipient of the AFI honor, following Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The ceremony is scheduled for April 28, 2026, in Los Angeles.
