The U.S. video game market saw a notable 21% dip in consumer spending this June compared to the same period in 2025. While this decline might appear discouraging at first glance—especially amidst broader economic pressures and rising costs—it is largely a reflection of how exceptionally robust June 2025 was, buoyed by the monumental arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, according to the latest analysis from Circana.

Leading the charts in 2026 for physical and digital sales is EA Sports UFC 6. The title secured the top spot, followed by Meccha Chameleon, with the cinematic action of 007 First Light and the acclaimed Star Fox—the recent Switch 2 reimagining of the classic 64 entry—rounding out the top four.

In total, the U.S. gaming sector generated $4.5 billion in June. Year-to-date spending currently stands at $27.5 billion, putting 2026 only 1% behind the performance of 2025. Hardware spending saw the sharpest decline, dropping 62% to $383 million, largely due to the difficult year-over-year comparison with the Switch 2’s explosive debut. While Switch 2 hardware revenue fell 79% from its launch window, it remains the market leader in both units and dollar volume for the year, with the PlayStation 5 holding steady in second place.

The broader console market faced headwinds as well, with PlayStation 5 spending decreasing by 19%, while Xbox Series performance saw an even steeper decline. Content spending—encompassing full game sales and microtransactions—slid by 12% to $3.9 billion for the month, though total year-to-date figures for content remain flat at $24.3 billion.

Perhaps the most unexpected trend was the resilience of subscription services, which stood as the only content segment to see growth, rising 7% over the previous year. Conversely, mobile gaming saw an uncharacteristic downturn, and accessory spending dropped 21%, with controller purchases seeing a significant 31% decrease.
