Dune: Awakening Developers Scaling Back PvP Elements

The developers behind the open-world survival title Dune: Awakening have announced a significant shift in their design philosophy. Citing data that revealed only 20% of the player base was actively participating in competitive combat, Funcom is pivoting toward a “PvE-first” experience. As detailed in a recent official update on Steam, the studio is moving to ensure that player-versus-player conflict becomes an elective activity rather than a mandatory obstacle for progression.

Funcom noted that for the vast majority of their community, the forced convergence of PvE and PvP—particularly within the hazardous Deep Desert—simply didn’t align with their preferred playstyle. Moving forward, the development team is doubling down on a player-versus-environment focus. While they acknowledge that combat remains a vital component of the Dune universe, they emphasized that such encounters “must be optional and incentivized rather than required for progression.”

According to the technical details provided in patch 1.3.20.0, the game’s infrastructure will be updated with the following core changes:

PvP Zone Restrictions: All designated PvP combat zones within the Hagga Basin have been deactivated across every official world.

Instance Customization: Official servers now provide distinct choices for traversing the Deep Desert:

• PvE Instances: Tailored for players who prefer uninterrupted exploration and survival mechanics. These areas are entirely free of player-initiated combat, including at shipwrecks.

• PvP Instances: Designed for those seeking high-stakes, open-world tension. To balance these risks, all resource gathering—including spice harvesting and mining—will offer a 2.5x yield multiplier.

The reception from the Dune: Awakening community has been overwhelmingly positive. Many long-term players noted that these requests for a less aggressive, more exploration-heavy environment date back to the beta testing phases. Furthermore, others expressed relief, citing that the previous mandatory PvP focus was often marred by the persistent issues of exploitation and cheating that plague many modern multiplayer titles.

For those who may have drifted away from the game due to the frustration of forced conflict, this update provides an ideal opportunity to return to Arrakis—especially as interest in the Dune franchise continues to reach new heights.

Dune: Awakening is currently available on Windows PC, with versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X expected to arrive later this year.
