Dua Lipa Joins Local Legend Billie Joe Armstrong for Green Day Cover in San Francisco: “I Love This Band”

At her Chase Center stop in San Francisco on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, Dua Lipa invited Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong to join her onstage for a rendition of “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The surprise appearance transformed a night of pop into a rousing, arena-sized singalong.

The cameo occurred near the end of Lipa’s performance. On every date of the Radical Optimism Tour she performs a cover of a local artist; for San Francisco she chose a Bay Area band with deep roots, and the band’s lead singer made a memorable entrance to help deliver the song.

“Every night we do a different song, we do a surprise song, and we do a song by a local artist,” Lipa told the audience before bringing Armstrong out. Watch the moment here.

As the opening guitar riff rang out, Armstrong and Lipa traded verses on the 2004 single, which climbed to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005. For a stretch the pop star’s set took on the thunder and immediacy of a rock show, the crowd responding with enthusiastic cheers and sing-along energy.

Lipa praised the band’s honesty and the space their music creates for listeners who feel like outsiders: a sentiment she said contributed to her decision to spotlight them in San Francisco — a city that birthed Green Day in nearby Rodeo, Calif.

The Radical Optimism Tour launched in November 2024; by the time the run wraps up in December 2025, Lipa will have spent more than a year on the road, finishing with three dates in Mexico City.

Previous local tributes on the tour have included Lorde’s “Royals” in New Zealand and Ariana Grande’s “One Last Time” in Miami. Armstrong wasn’t the only guest to join Lipa this month — Gwen Stefani also made a cameo in Los Angeles earlier in October to sing “Don’t Speak.”
