‘Drive’ Soundtrack Producer Kavinsky Found Dead in Paris at Age 50

Pioneering French electronic music producer Kavinsky has passed away at the age of 50.

The somber news was initially brought to light by the French publication Le Figaro, which reported that the artist—legally named Vincent Belorgey—was discovered lifeless in his private residence in Paris late Tuesday evening, July 28, roughly around 10:30 p.m. local time.

According to statements obtained by USA Today, the local prosecutor’s office announced, “An official inquiry has been launched to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding his passing, as initial investigators found no suspicious signs at the scene.”

Citing a police source, Le Figaro noted that authorities are currently investigating a potential stroke as the underlying cause of death, following reports that the musician had been experiencing severe headaches over the preceding several days. Emergency services were ultimately dispatched after a neighbor grew anxious upon not seeing him for some time.

Kavinsky emerged as a central figure in the vibrant electronic music renaissance that swept through Paris during the early and mid-2000s. Alongside contemporaries like Justice, Braxe & Falcon, Breakbot, Sebastian, and fellow visionaries from Paris’s Ed Banger Records, he helped propel French house and electro-pop onto the international stage. In 2010, he released his defining masterpiece, “Nightcall,” a foundational synthwave anthem that achieved legendary status after serving as a centerpiece for the soundtrack of the 2011 Hollywood thriller Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. He is widely celebrated as one of the chief architects of the modern synthwave genre.

The iconic track experienced a massive resurgence in popularity in 2024 when Kavinsky delivered a breathtaking live rendition during the Closing Ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. Performing alongside Belgian songstress Angèle—part of a star-studded lineup that also featured Phoenix and Air—the momentous occasion shattered records. Shazam data provided to Billboard revealed that the performance generated the most Shazamed minute in the history of the application.

In the wake of his passing, friends, fans, and industry peers have flooded social media with heartfelt tributes. His record label, Because Music, shared an official statement: “The entire Because family is profoundly devastated by the loss of Vincent Belorgey, known globally as Kavinsky. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his loved ones, and everyone who had the distinct honor of knowing and collaborating with such a genuine creative visionary.”
