Double Fine announce RAD, a post-apocalyptic hack n’ slasher

Double Fine have simply unveiled tongue-in-cheek ’80s-themed post-apocalyptic hack n’ slasher RAD. Players management a baseball bat-swinging, life-bringing teen as they discover a radioactive wasteland, preventing and looting as they go, motion RPG fashion. Wherever you stroll, lush inexperienced grass sprouts in your wake, however publicity to the weirdness of the wastes adjustments you in flip. Players can decide up a bunch of massive, bizarre, seen mutations; A stretchy snake-head, gnarly tree-legs or a horrible ovipositor to spit eggs and spawn teen-headed spider minions – ick. See the reveal trailer beneath.

This being an isometric-ish hack n’ slasher, it solely stands to motive that the game’s wasteland – The Fallow – is procedurally generated. The mutations remind me a little bit of The Binding Of Isaac of their mixed gruesomeness and practicality. While Double Fine don’t use the R-word on their official web page, there does appear to be a little bit of roguelike/roguelite to the game, with speak of day by day runs, and new baseball bats unlocked to provide your later characters an early foot up. Players can even select to financial institution assets to be used on future runs, or spend it on upgrades instantly.

There’s nothing too wildly authentic about any of this – it’s a well-known mix of components put collectively in a barely totally different configuration, but it surely does look and sound good. I’m nonetheless not bored with synthwave music and the encompassing aesthetic, and have come to phrases that the pseudo-nostalgic ’80s is right here to remain as a cultural artefact. If there’s one factor I can grumble about it’s the trailer narrator, who falls a bit flat on his ironic supply. Still, it’s good to see a brilliant and vibrant tackle the apocalypse made much more vibrant simply by working round it, and a few of these mutations are downright grody. Double Fine are taking sign-ups for a closed beta in just a few weeks.

RAD is out “Soon”, and virtually actually earlier than the 12 months’s finish. Despite Double Fine being a writer themselves and the game debuting on a Nintendo indie stream, Bandai Namco are publishing. Check out the official web page here. Double Fine are taking sign-ups for an April eighth closed beta here.
