While the legacy of Pokémon is built upon three decades of nurturing and evolving creatures, the human element has always been the heart of the franchise. Yet, despite the recent arrival of iconic pocket monsters like Pikachu, Mewtwo, and Gengar in Lego form, the absence of legendary protagonists such as Ash, Misty, and Brock is hard to ignore. In an exclusive discussion with Polygon, Lego representatives shed light on the development of their innovative “Smart Play” Pokémon line—and the deliberate reasoning behind the exclusion of classic minifigures.

According to Siddharth Muthyala, Design Director at The Lego Group, the primary mission for these interactive sets was to distill the authentic spirit of the monsters themselves. To achieve this, the design team leaned heavily on insights from younger fans of the series.

"Whenever we engage with children and enthusiasts, the overwhelming desire is to step into the role of a Pokémon Trainer," says Muthyala. "When you peel back the layers of that experience, it’s all about the discovery, the thrill of the catch, providing care, and honing your partner's skills for combat."

The "Smart Tags" integrated into these sets are engineered to bring that fantasy to life. By tracking physical movement, the toys simulate the leveling-up process; as your Pokémon grows stronger, its prowess in simulated battles increases. All of this unfolds without a digital screen, relying entirely on immersive audio-visual cues. Furthermore, the sets are designed to be modular, allowing users to combine different components to create custom roleplay scenarios. The objective is to maintain a fluid, distraction-free environment that holds a child’s focus.

"Our commitment to this immersive experience is why we omitted minifigures entirely; the children *are* the Trainers," Muthyala explains. "We wanted players to step directly into the Pokémon world. The humans are not toys on the sidelines—the children themselves are the ones discovering, bonding with, and training their Pokémon. That was a very purposeful creative choice."

It is a compelling argument. Still, should Lego ever reconsider its stance, a set featuring Team Rocket or classic Trainers would almost certainly be an instant hit among the adult collector community.
