Director of “The Hunger Games” to Make Dystopian Film “Scarlet Uprising” for Paramount
Francis Lawrence, the filmmaker behind several Hunger Games installments and Constantine, is set to direct the upcoming adaptation of Red Rising, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Paramount Pictures will distribute the film, which is based on Pierce Brown’s 2014 science fiction novel of the same name. The story is set in a future where humanity has colonized Mars and organized its society into a rigid, color-coded caste system. The protagonist, Darrow, belongs to the lowest caste, the Reds, and sets out to infiltrate the ruling elite by passing himself off as one of the Golds.
Universal tried to bring Red Rising to the screen in the 2010s, with Marc Forster (World War Z) attached to direct. The new screenplay is being adapted by Justin Rhodes, whose credits include Terminator: Dark Fate and the forthcoming BioShock.
Lawrence has directed four films in the Hunger Games series. The latest, Sunrise on the Reaping, opens in Russia on November 19.
