Diplo poked fun at the rumored “love triangle” between Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau in a lighthearted Instagram post that quickly drew attention.
On Monday, Nov. 3, the DJ uploaded a selfie taken at a crowded event with the former Canadian prime minister. In the snapshot, Diplo makes an exaggerated face while Trudeau fixes a composed stare at the camera.
He captioned the image, “the one that got away,” a playful nod to Perry’s 2011 hit.
The Instagram post follows Diplo’s recent on-air recollection of his brief relationship with Perry during an appearance on Nayeema Raza’s Smart Girls Dumb Questions podcast. When the host began to suggest she knew “so many people” who’d dated the politician, Diplo interjected, “… who’ve dated Katy Perry? Like me?”
The two were romantically linked for a short time around 2014. A few years later, Perry ranked him low on a list of past partners — an exchange that prompted Diplo to quip on X that he’d “won the bronze in sex Olympics.”
On the podcast, he remarked that Perry dating Trudeau was “pretty fire,” even joking that he’d “dated Trudeau, too” before admitting it was an odd situation and that, while he’s not generally into politicians, “he is kinda hot.”
Those comments arrived in the wake of Perry and Trudeau’s first public outing as a couple in Paris. Prior to that, Trudeau was seen at one of Diplo’s concerts in Montreal and later shared affectionate moments with Perry on a boat.
