In the latest entry of the franchise, special emphasis has been placed on refining the game’s user interface.
The team behind “Korea. IL-2 Series” has recently re-entered the conversation. 1C Game Studios has taken a fresh look at the in-game interface.
The redesign of the game menu was shaped by feedback from IL-2 fans and the demands of VR users:
In the settings we tried to address the requests and critiques players voiced while playing “The Great Battles.” Graphics options have been reorganized into more logical groups, with icons and tooltips added to help users find optimal configurations. New features include a choice of VR API (OpenVR or OpenXR), FSR-based image scaling, an option to display the pilot’s body in first-person view, and a graphics preset specifically optimized for VR.
In addition, the control settings have undergone major revisions: the team “invested considerable effort to make what is arguably the most complex dialog in the game’s interface clearer and easier to read. To simplify command sorting, a combination of tabs and filters was implemented.”
When designing the map in “Korea. IL-2 Series,” the artists followed a consistent aesthetic: the map was crafted to resemble an authentic atomic-era document and was enriched with a wealth of information — elevation data, more detailed layouts of settlements and industrial areas, and a finer representation of vegetation.
A highly detailed navigation map has always been a cornerstone of our team’s interfaces — from Rise of Flight and “The Great Battles” to now “Korea.” Adopting a new UI API made it possible to optimize rendering performance significantly. Complex map components composed of many dynamic elements, which proved unworkable with acceptable performance on the Scaleform API during development of the “Marshal” mode in “The Great Battles,” run smoothly and quickly on the new Noesis API. Naturally, this didn’t perform perfectly out of the box — we invested substantial effort writing the application layer for this feature — but the end result is excellent.
