Developer Restores and Releases Canceled Quake 4 Expansion The Awakening
An old project has received a new lease on life.
MachineGames and Bethesda Softworks recently released a major update for the original Quake featuring a new episode titled Dawn of the Machine. Against this backdrop, another release important to franchise fans has arrived as the expansion The Awakening for the shooter Quake 4.
The DLC was previously never brought to an official release and was canceled, but it has now returned thanks to a fortunate turn of events.
Developer jmarshall23 (Justin Marshall) explained that he gained access to the files by accident. He was going through a difficult period in his life at the time and bought an old computer on Amazon. While examining the contents of the hard drive, he discovered the files:
This literally saved my life: I was going through a divorce at the time, and stumbling upon something like this by pure chance was simply incredible. Thank you to the team that created it, and I hope the community can do something amazing with it!

As a result, the Quake 4: The Awakening expansion has been restored and is now playable. Gameplay videos have already started appearing online, showing that players will be able to use a cryogenic gun and other weapon models, as well as encounter new enemy types.
The source code for the “Quake_4_Alpha” project has been published publicly on GitHub in the jmarshall23 repository. A copy of the game, such as one from Steam, is required to run it.
