The legendary Sam “Serious” Stone is staging a massive comeback, but this time, the iconic hero is bringing some backup from across the cosmos. Unveiled during the latest Xbox Partner Preview, Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a stylized, multiverse-hopping first-person shooter that reimagines the franchise through a prism of reality-bending chaos. You can catch the high-octane reveal trailer below.
In a departure from tradition, Shatterverse features a quintet of playable Sams, each hailing from a different dimension and boasting a distinct visual aesthetic. Designed as a cooperative roguelite experience, the game allows up to five players to join forces, with every participant assuming the role of a unique iteration of Sam. While the series’ signature arsenal makes a return, players will also get their hands on experimental “Shatterverse” weaponry to deal with the encroaching hordes.
Notably, development duties have shifted for this entry. While the series was birthed by Croteam, Shatterverse is being spearheaded by Behaviour Interactive—the studio behind the asymmetric horror hit Dead by Daylight—with the indie veterans at Devolver Digital returning as publishers.
“Our primary objective was to honor the explosive legacy of Serious Sam while injecting a modern, vibrant energy that the franchise hasn’t explored yet,” stated Nic Duchesne of Behaviour Interactive. “Collaborating with Devolver has been a thrill; they are true industry renegades who prioritize creative vision above all else.”
Though highlighted during an Xbox showcase, Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a multi-platform release. The game is slated to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC later this year.
