David Tennant’s Doctor Who Returns With New Release for 20th Anniversary

Currently, Doctor Who faces production challenges while seeking a new television home after its recent tenure with Disney. Twenty years earlier, the Doctor confronted a different kind of adversary. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of the scariest episodes in the show’s history, BBC Studios, Fathom Entertainment, and CinemaLive are bringing a special cinematic presentation to the big screen for one night only with Doctor Who: The Satan Pit Extended Cut.

The event takes place on Doctor Who Day on Nov. 23. It presents the episodes “The Impossible Planet” and “The Satan Pit” in a new movie-length cut. The two-part story follows the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) as they arrive at a sanctuary base orbiting a black hole. A human expedition is drilling into the planet to discover what prevents the base from falling into the black hole, which accidentally awakens a creature known as The Beast.

The two-part story tests the Doctor’s faith and resolve, challenging his understanding as a Time Lord. It also introduced the Ood, a telepathic alien race that remains one of the most recognizable additions to the modern series.

Doctor Who: The Satan Pit Extended Cut includes deleted scenes previously available only on home video, alongside never-before-seen extended footage. Audiences will also see an exclusive interview with BAFTA-winning director and producer James Strong, who reflects on the behind-the-scenes work involved in making the original episodes.

Even with a story as loved as The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, we’re able to offer fans something they haven’t experienced before, with previously deleted scenes restored into the adventure and never-before-seen extended footage included in this special cinema cut,” Natasha Spence, Global Events Director at BBC Studios, shared in a press release. “Doctor Who Day is the perfect moment to celebrate that sense of discovery with fans. We’re delighted to be working with CinemaLive again to bring this unforgettable Tenth Doctor and Rose story to the big screen, and to give audiences the chance to experience it together in cinemas for the first time.”
