Dave Kendall, the quintessential British presenter who served as a cultural compass for the alternative rock movement, has passed away at 68. As the long-time face of MTV’s seminal program 120 Minutes, Kendall was instrumental in bringing underground sounds to the living rooms of a generation. The news of his passing was shared on Tuesday, July 14, by his friend and fellow MTV alum, Matt Pinfield.

“Dave was a true believer in the art,” Pinfield noted in a poignant tribute on social media. “Long before alternative music was a mainstream fixture, he was there every single week on 120 Minutes, championing the bands that would eventually define a generation. He didn’t just host a show; he provided a sanctuary for music that needed to be heard. His authenticity and deep respect for both the artists and the audience were a rare gift.”

Kendall’s trajectory in media began in print, contributing sharp journalism and critical reviews to esteemed outlets such as Melody Maker, Spin, and the New York Post. After crossing the Atlantic to New York, he was recruited by MTV to develop 120 Minutes. During his seven-year tenure, he served as a writer, producer, and reporter, helping to cement the network’s influence on the music industry.

Between 1988 and 1991, Kendall’s stewardship of 120 Minutes became a launchpad for the alternative explosion, most notably when he premiered the music video for Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in 1991—a turning point for rock history. Following his iconic run, the show continued through various iterations before its conclusion in the early 2000s.

Beyond his work at MTV, Kendall’s career remained diverse and prolific. He hosted the nationally syndicated Music Scoupe, fronted the global Soccer Rocks the Globe broadcast, and anchored the Woodstock ’94 coverage. His career also spanned radio, early digital streaming development, and a successful seven-year DJ residency at New York’s iconic Limelight club. In his later years, Kendall relocated to Bangkok, where he produced the travel series Destination Thailand and contributed editorial content to the Bangkok Post beginning in 2017.
