Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 3 Status: What Is Known About a Netflix Renewal

Comment Views: 2

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 ends on a note that is unusual for this franchise. Some characters look forward to tomorrow. The season 2 finale still delivers plenty of devastating TV moments, as season 1 did. But several central characters survive, with relationships worth holding onto and lives they still want to live. That makes a more direct follow-up even more tempting.

Whether another installment will follow those characters is a separate question. CD Projekt Red has described both Edgerunners stories as standalone projects. Its creators have also outlined an approach that gives different filmmakers room to explore the same world. So what does that mean for the Netflix series going forward?

Here is what we know about a possible Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 3, what the creators have said about the franchise’s future, and how season 2 leaves room for more.

Will there be a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 3?

Season 3 has no confirmed release date, cast or production schedule yet. Edgerunners 2 arrived on Netflix on Oct. 20. Netflix sometimes announces a new season shortly after the previous one premieres.

There are good reasons to think the series could support more stories. The creators have discussed developing Edgerunners through different directors’ interpretations of its central themes. The first two installments also show how separate casts can inhabit an interconnected Night City.

What have the creators said about more Edgerunners seasons?

Standalone storytelling has been part of Edgerunners from the start. CD Projekt Red’s June 2020 announcement introduced the original as a “standalone, 10-episode story.” Its July 2025 announcement described the follow-up as “a new standalone anime series featuring a brand-new cast of characters.” David Martinez’s story could end while Edgerunners continued. The same principle could apply after season 2.

Writer and story creator Bartosz Sztybor and producer Saya Elder described the show to Polygon as an anthology. It is built around shared themes and different creative visions. Sztybor cited the first four Alien movies as inspiration, since each director gave the franchise a distinct style. His ambition for Edgerunners was to preserve its “core themes, but to experiment.” Individual directors would have the freedom to develop their own interpretations of the world.

The second installment already works this way. Kai Ikarashi succeeds Hiroyuki Imaishi as director and brings a different visual sensibility to a new ensemble. Ambition, sacrifice, family and survival remain the themes, but the characters approach them from different directions. Night City is the constant. A third installment could introduce another crew, revisit supporting characters, or explore the consequences of earlier events without picking up directly after season 2.

Edgerunners 2 ending explained: how does it set up season 3?

Major spoilers for both seasons of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follow.

Season 2 ends somewhere that feels uncannily familiar from season 1. The protagonist gets hold of a piece of dangerous experimental tech and goes on a rampage. For David, that was the Prototype Arasaka Cyberskeleton. For Talia (Kimoy Lee) and D (Nazeeh Tarsha), it is the neurochip holding the digital AI entity Capri (Brittany Lauda). The chip seems to give them absolute control over all technology and metal.

Earlier in the season, D was exposed to the chip and took Capri’s soul with him, and he later took the chip back. Talia is reunited with Capri after Kang Tao ambushes D and forcibly takes the chip from him. Then she learns that her father, Kiril Yang (Daniel Wu), killed her mother Avida. Talia pulls an Akira. She uses Capri’s powers to become a giant, terrifying monster made of huge pieces of scrap metal and terrorizes the city. Corporate forces gather to destroy her, and D makes a last-ditch effort to retrieve the chip. He succeeds, makes sure his friends get away, and faces the entire enemy force head-on.

Our review of the season, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 finds something worth living for in Night City, calls it an extraordinary ensemble with dazzling animation and a warmer, more hopeful heart.

D and Capri’s final moments are deliberately uplifting. They point to a distant star or satellite and wonder if they can make it there. The large-scale explosion that follows makes it all but certain they have died. The scene echoes David’s death in season 1, though D has his own reasons for embracing that final moment. His storyline made clear he had nothing left to live for once vengeance was no longer an option. He lived purely to reunite with Capri and have a little fun along the way. Capri is simply too dangerous to be left alive, so she may be better off deleted. Still, there is always a chance she escaped to the net or something similar.

Every villain this season dies in the explosive finale. Roman (Valeria Rodriguez), Talia, Weak (Clancy Brown) and even D’s old clanmate Omi (Analesa Fisher) walk away.

Talia’s mysterious condition seems stable for the time being. She leaves Night City with Weak to seek treatment elsewhere. She and Roman promise each other they will meet again. Roman is left marching through the streets, looking for his next recording subject. He and his camera offer a natural route into other people’s stories. Following him could introduce another crew while keeping a connection to season 2. He wouldn’t even need to stay a central character. Someone who documents Night City could plausibly cross paths with all sorts of future protagonists. Even if Roman never returns, his season 2 arc reached a satisfying conclusion.

There is no confirmed release window. The gap between the first two installments doesn’t set a schedule for a third.

The original series arrived in 2022, followed by Edgerunners 2 in 2026. The original announcement also noted that CD Projekt Red had been working on the first anime since 2018. Release dates alone don’t show when development on another story might begin or how long production would take.

For now, the ending lets viewers imagine a continuation without depending on one. Roman has more to film, Talia has a chance to live, and Weak has found a reason to look forward. Another Edgerunners story could follow them. It could also find an entirely different group of people trying to make a life in the same unforgiving city.
