Cult Shooter Black Gets Fan-Made Android Port
Criterion Games’ shooter BLACK, released in 2006 on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, now has an unofficial port for Android. Enthusiasts continue to bring console classics to smartphones.
At the time, the game stood out for its spectacular firefights, destructible environments, and graphics that impressed for its generation. Despite its cult status, it never received a remaster or a remake. Thanks to this fan project, players can now return to it even on a smartphone.
The port comes from a developer who goes by RanggaCasper and based the work on the original Xbox version. For mobile devices, he added touch controls with customizable button placement, along with aiming via the gyroscope. The port also supports gamepads with vibration, as well as keyboard and mouse. In the settings, players can change the resolution, field of view, and draw distance. In update 1.5.0, the author also fixed some graphics-effect issues on devices with Mali graphics.
The port requires Android 10 or newer, a 64-bit ARM processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, and Vulkan 1.1 support. Players must supply the game files themselves. Either their own BLACK image for Xbox or extracted data from the American or European release will work.
