Critics did not like Kantemir Balagov’s “Butterfly Jam”

Kantemir Balagov’s Butterfly Jam has struggled to impress critics, as reflected by its current standing on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. At present, the film holds a mere 38% approval rating, based on 12 professional reviews.

While the project has faced criticism, reviewers have lauded the performances of Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough. Cinematographer Jomo Fray (Nickel Boys) also received high praise for his visual work, alongside the evocative soundtrack composed by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine.

Conversely, the screenplay has drawn significant criticism for leaving essential narrative elements underdeveloped. Detractors have described the dialogue as aimless and hollow, noting that the film suffers from a disjointed tone that prevents it from feeling like a cohesive cinematic experience.

The film held its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
