Critical Role to Collaborate With The Rings of Power on Middle-earth Project
Critical Role fans love the cast’s long, multi-episode campaigns. The group has also played plenty of Dungeons & Dragons and Daggerheart one-shots. Some of them proved controversial (who can forget the Wendy collaboration?). Several sponsored one-shots, including Control: Resonant and Suikoden, were also great fun to watch.
Besides asking for a shorter viewing commitment, these one-shots often change how the cast plays. They adapt a setting to D&D mechanics, which generally suit high fantasy better.
The next one-shot avoids that problem. Critical Role will be collaborating with a familiar high fantasy setting: Middle-earth from The Lord of the Rings.
Critical Role meets The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power at TwitchCon
Fans attending TwitchCon San Diego this November will see a new collaboration between Critical Role and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The event, called The Rings of Power: A Middle-Earth One-Shot, takes place on Nov. 15 at 11AM in the Glitch Theater. It will feature the Critical Role cast and the cast of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power in a new tabletop adventure. Critical Role co-founder Liam O’Brien will lead the one-shot. He is best known for playing Vax in The Legend of Vox Machina, the animated adaptation of Campaign 1.

Nothing has been confirmed yet about which rules the one-shot will use. It could be D&D or Critical Role’s own TTRPG, Daggerheart. Some collaborations, such as the Overwatch one-shot, have used Daggerheart, while others have used D&D. There is also a small chance it could use the ruleset of The One Ring, the successful TTRPG set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
The cast lists are also unconfirmed. No one has said which members of the Rings of Power and Critical Role casts will take part. TwitchCon’s official website says more details are coming soon.
Critical Role has played in Middle-earth before. In 2017, the group collaborated with Warner Bros. on an actual-play one-shot for the game Shadow of War. Whether they will play as trolls and orcs this time remains to be seen.
