Since the launch of Campaign 4, the Critical Role community has been clamoring for an official glimpse at a world map. Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan’s evocative narration has painted a vivid picture of the world of Aramán—from the jagged, towering peaks of Riesingürtle to the suffocating shadow of the Eternal Night—but a visual representation remains elusive. While we know a map of Pasitar, the continent serving as the campaign’s backdrop, exists tucked away in the players’ binders, it has yet to be shared with the audience.
However, thanks to cast members Liam O’Brien and Taliesin Jaffe—who portray Halandil Fang and Bolaire Lothalia, respectively—we now know that Mulligan has also crafted a map for the city of Dol-Makjar that the public has yet to see.
During a recent video interview with Polygon, we couldn’t help but voice our surprise that a map for such a central location remained hidden. “That seems like an oversight on our part,” Jaffe admitted to Polygon. “There is a map, I swear. It’s beautiful.”
O’Brien added that, beyond the world and city maps, Mulligan also illustrated the countryside surrounding Dol-Makjar. Yet, he noted that this is an exceptionally dated piece of work. It remains to be seen if it will ever be revealed, or if the evolution of the campaign’s lore has rendered it obsolete, no longer aligning with the canonical vision held by the DM and the cast.
Though the lack of a public map might be an oversight, there is no guarantee we will see the official Dol-Makjar rendering anytime soon. Still, that hasn’t deterred observant fans on Reddit, who believe they caught a glimpse of it during the twentieth episode, “The Vanishing.” After some community sleuthing and digital enhancement, many “Critters” feel they have a better grasp of the city’s layout. For now, however, we must continue to rely on our own imaginations to navigate the city where so much of the Campaign 4 drama unfolds.
