Creators of Russian horror ILL reveal locations and discuss world-building
The developers are plotting fresh ways to unsettle players.
Recently, Team Clout revisited their horror project ILL. The studio published a development diary focused on worldbuilding, released a series of screenshots, and laid out their vision:
“Our story takes place within a vast research FORT. It’s isolated, industrial, and shrouded in mystery. Inside it sits a specific area that serves as a central hub—the beating heart of a concealed infrastructure. Here players will encounter a structure of tremendous scale, discovering its enormity both from the exterior and within. At its core is a massive turbine installation that not only powers the FORT but is integrated into gameplay: exploration, traversal mechanics, resource usage, and puzzle-like interactions all find a place here. Consequently, players will have to work hard to find a way forward.”
The team said their main visual influences were brutalism and constructivism: “exposed concrete, untreated steel, and the rugged grandeur of industrial design. These references helped us forge an environment that feels simultaneously monumental and oppressive.”
While horror often thrives in tight corridors, the developers set out to accomplish something different — they wanted to evoke dread inside a vast hall.
