Creators of flight sim “Korea. IL-2” discuss animating aircraft assemblies — and more
1C Game Studios continues to unveil further production details.
The team behind “Korea. IL-2 Series” recently published a developer diary focused on crafting animations for aircraft assemblies and gun mounts, along with animating interactions with surfaces.
To the developers, an aircraft is treated as a mathematical construct: the engine operates on various parameters such as coordinates, state, and other variables.
“…the player sees the model on screen and it must reflect what happens to the aircraft inside the simulation. Anything that can occur to the plane—positions of control surfaces, damage, structural deformation—is pre-created in the model, divided into discrete events, and those prebuilt sequences are precisely the animations prepared for the model.”
An engineer’s responsibility is to “explain” the simulation to the visual system, connecting what the code computes (through physics and mathematics) to the model’s predefined states, for example the positions of the landing gear or flaps.
