Claire Denis to Direct True Crime Film About Soapmaking and Cannibalism

Renowned French filmmaker Claire Denis (Beau Travail, High Life) is developing a new project: a chilling crime drama titled “The Soap Maker.”

The film draws inspiration from the harrowing true story of Leonarda Cianciulli, an Italian woman infamously dubbed the “Soap Maker of Correggio.” Between 1939 and 1940, she murdered and dismembered several acquaintances, subsequently rendering their remains into soap and incorporating their blood into baked goods.

Denis will direct the feature in English, though casting for the lead role has yet to be announced. Her most recent film, The Fence starring Matt Dillon, premiered last year.
