While CD Projekt Red is currently gearing up to release a surprise third expansion for the decade-old The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for similar post-launch content for The Witcher 4. In a recent earnings call, CEO Michał Nowakowski clarified that the studio’s ambitious roadmap—which targets a trilogy of new Witcher titles within a tight six-year window—simply doesn’t leave room for additional expansion development.
Although details regarding the next chapter in the saga remain scarce, we know the story will center on Ciri, the formidable trainee introduced in The Witcher 3. This upcoming title is intended to be the cornerstone of a new trilogy. Balancing the creation of three massive RPGs in such a condensed timeframe is a monumental task, and the leadership team is prioritizing the completion of these core experiences over supplementary content.
“Our roadmap is exceptionally ambitious,” Nowakowski admitted when questioned about the potential for future expansions. “To be perfectly candid, our focus is entirely on delivering these three games within a six-year period. Given the scope of this project, developing expansions on top of that would be a significant challenge.”
This news might come as a disappointment to fans who fondly remember the high-quality expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, or those eagerly anticipating the upcoming Songs of the Past DLC. However, the studio appears committed to maximizing its output through the new trilogy itself.
While we wait for further updates on The Witcher 4, you can catch a glimpse of Ciri and her mount, Kelpie, in the latest Unreal Engine technical showcase.
