Cate Blanchett to Star in How to Train Your Dragon Sequel

Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett is slated to join the cast of the upcoming sequel to the live-action fantasy epic “How to Train Your Dragon,” according to industry reports.

Blanchett will reprise her role as Valka, the mother of the protagonist Hiccup (played by Mason Thames). This marks a return to the character for the actress, who previously voiced Valka in the 2014 and 2019 installments of the original DreamWorks animated trilogy.

While an official release window for the sequel has yet to be disclosed, the live-action reimagining proved to be a massive success upon its Summer 2025 debut, grossing $636 million at the global box office. Outside of the dragon-riding franchise, Blanchett recently finished work on Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming espionage thriller, “Black Bag.”
