Cardi B recently navigated a turbulent period in her personal life, and she says fellow artist Shakira offered meaningful counsel that helped her cope.

On Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, published Monday, Oct. 6, Cardi recounted a stretch in her marriage to Offset when the couple’s affection noticeably diminished. She acknowledged feeling the love slip away on both sides and conceded that, at times, she “chose to be lonely.”

While working with Shakira on the collaboration “Punteria,” Cardi asked how Shakira had managed to get through heartbreak. Shakira’s response — that such pain can happen and can be endured — initially struck Cardi as impossible to accept.

Over time, Cardi realized she would have to survive the disintegration of that relationship just as Shakira had advised. The process included tears and frightening thoughts, but Cardi says she came out the other side stronger — “I’m the strongest I’ve been.”

The conversation aired a few weeks after the Grammy winner released her second studio album, Am I the Drama? After eight years together, Cardi filed for divorce for a second time in July 2024, and the pair have continued to trade public remarks while working through the legal process.

Outside of those disputes, Cardi has moved forward personally: earlier this year she began dating NFL star Stefon Diggs, and she is now expecting her first child with him.
