As global icons, BTS frequently dominates discussions regarding the ultimate “bucket list” performance: the Super Bowl Halftime Show. While the band continues to capture international headlines, they recently revealed that one of their own had an actual invitation to grace that legendary stage—only for logistics to get in the way.

During a candid Rolling Stone cover story, the conversation turned toward the possibility of the septet performing at the Big Game. When the interviewer noted that Jung Kook reacted with a slight grimace at the mere mention of the event, RM provided the backstory: “Jung Kook was almost there, because Usher invited him before his military service.”

“Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out because he had to enlist,” the group leader clarified.

Usher’s electrifying Super Bowl LVIII performance took place in early 2024, arriving just months after Jung Kook began his mandatory service in the South Korean military. While the K-pop superstar was unable to participate, Usher still delivered a high-octane set featuring guest appearances from Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Lil Jon, and will.i.am.

Regarding his feelings on potentially headlining the show in the future, Jung Kook remained humble: “Of course, it’s a dream, but that’s not really up to us.”

RM echoed the sentiment, praising the scale of the production. “It is unequivocally the most prestigious stage in the world,” he noted, offering praise for recent performers. “It’s a massive platform.”

Reflecting on the cultural shift in music consumption, the group addressed the potential for a non-English performance at the Super Bowl. While acknowledging that they might encounter resistance, the members remain optimistic about the global reach of Korean culture. “As the world becomes more familiar with Korean cinema and music, perspectives are shifting,” RM explained. “If the opportunity ever arises, it is definitely something we would love to pursue.”
