In the midst of her messy, ongoing conservatorship case, pop star Britney Spears found a creative outlet Tuesday (July 27) to deal with the stress and express herself — by painting.
The “Hit Me Baby One More Time” singer posted an IGTV video to her Instagram of herself spreading green, yellow, orange blue and purple paints across a huge white roll of paper, pausing every so often for a quick dance break. “As you guys know there’s a lot of change going on in my life,” she began her caption. “at the moment and today I was feeling overwhelmed so I went to Michael’s and got white paper and paint … I wanted to see color and this is me messing around !!!”
While dancing, serving unforgettable hit songs, and generally being one of pop’s biggest stars ever are all things Spears is good at, painting might not quite make it on that list. She took a moment to joke in her caption about the quality of her very abstract work of art. “Ok so I’m not a professional painter,” she wrote, “but I certainly felt like I was! If you look closely you can see find a fish in there somewhere !!!”
Spears has been at odds with her own family as she fights to regain control of her life after being in a restrictive conservatorship for the past 13 years. During a June 23 hearing, the pop star testified publicly for the first time. In her emotional speech, she described the conservatorship — of which dad Jamie Spears is co-conservator — as abusive, likening it to sex trafficking, and said she wanted those involved to be put behind bars.
