Brazil to Protect Youth and Ban Loot Boxes in Games for Under-18s
New legislation designed to protect the younger generation online is slated to take effect in March 2026.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a law prohibiting loot boxes in video games for players under 18. The measure, aimed at strengthening safeguards for youth on the internet, is set to come into force in March 2026, according to Eurogamer.
Under the new rules, titles that include loot boxes will be rated “18+”, and loot boxes will be forbidden in games with a lower age classification.
In 2023 the Netherlands proposed a complete ban on loot boxes, and Belgium implemented a similar prohibition in 2018, which led to the suspension of FIFA Points sales in that country.
