Blizzard Is Ending Support for Overwatch’s Best Mode
Overwatch‘s Stadium mode is reaching the end of the road. Blizzard Entertainment announced on Wednesday that it will cease the development of new maps and heroes for the MOBA-inspired format. In a recent Director’s Take update, game director Aaron Keller clarified why the studio is sunsetting what was once intended to be a foundational pillar of the hero shooter.

According to Keller, Stadium has found its home among a "dedicated, smaller audience." Internal metrics reveal that the mode accounts for merely 6% of the game’s daily active user base. In contrast, standard experiences—specifically the 5v5 Unranked and Ranked Role Queue—remain the community favorites, while interest in 6v6 playlists continues to climb.

"With this in mind, while we'll continue supporting Stadium with seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, we’re not planning on expanding it with new heroes or maps," Keller noted. "Instead, we are reallocating our talented developers and the insights gained from this project toward our future initiatives."

To provide context on the current player distribution as of June—roughly 14 months after the mode's debut—here is how the daily population breaks down:

Unranked Role Queue 5v5: ~54%

Ranked Role Queue 5v5: ~37%

Unranked Open Queue 6v6: ~19%

Ranked Open Queue 6v6: ~8%

Unranked Mystery Heroes 6v6: ~4%

Stadium Ranked: ~3%

Stadium Unranked: ~3%

With active development halted, the current roster of 33 playable heroes in Stadium appears to be locked in. Given that the mode currently supports only a fraction of the full 52-hero cast, the absence of fresh content will likely lead to a gradual decline in engagement over the coming months.

Stadium first launched on April 22, 2025, starting with 17 heroes before expanding seasonally. Integrating new characters was a resource-intensive process, as the mode required custom modifications, unique perks, and ability remixes. Over a series of up to seven rounds, players would incrementally upgrade their heroes with improved armor, reduced cooldowns, and transformative powers. While Blizzard attempted to lower the barrier to entry with pre-set builds, the mode’s inherent complexity remained a hurdle for some.

The transition of the Stadium team onto other projects likely mirrors the broader organizational shifts occurring within Blizzard Entertainment following the recent string of Xbox-wide layoffs.
