Black Panther 3 Casting News Confirms an Avengers: Secret Wars Theory That Will Change the MCU Forever
By nearly any metric, the timeline simply refuses to align. During Marvel’s blockbuster presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, The Long Walk breakout star David Jonsson was officially confirmed to step into the role of the new Black Panther in Black Panther III, slated for a December 2028 release. He will portray T’Challa’s young son, whom audiences were first introduced to in the emotional closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
However, David Jonsson is currently 32 years old, whereas T’Challa’s heir appeared merely as a young child in the sequel. Naturally, this prompts a pressing question: how can Marvel bridge this massive chronological gap? And what implications might this hold for the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe landscape following Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027?
T’Challa’s son was the ultimate surprise of Wakanda Forever
At the conclusion of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, following a devastating conflict between Wakanda and the subterranean realm of Talokan, Shuri (Letitia Wright) journeys to Haiti to visit her late brother’s partner, Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o). Nakia drops a bombshell revelation: before his passing, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and she shared a son, choosing to shield him far away from the crushing burdens of the Wakandan crown. The child (portrayed by Divine Love Konadu-Sun) is initially introduced as Toussaint, before ultimately disclosing that his birth name mirrors his father’s: T’Challa.
When Divine Love Konadu-Sun stepped into the role, he was approximately seven years old, perfectly fitting the in-universe chronology. Presuming Toussaint was born shortly after the events of the original 2018 Black Panther—factoring in the five-year Blip from Avengers: Endgame—the character would logically be around seven or eight during the events of Wakanda Forever. Advancing six years to align with the release of Black Panther III would place him at roughly 14 years of age—which is far too young to realistically match a mature adult lead. Even if Jonsson portrays someone in his early twenties, bridging the gap to a teenager remains a significant stretch.
What this casting choice signals for the future of the franchise
Consequently, an extensive time jump is practically guaranteed to occur within either Avengers: Doomsday or the highly anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled to premiere in 2027.
The moniker “Secret Wars” draws inspiration from two iconic Marvel comic storylines. The original Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars debuted in the mid-1980s, centering on the all-powerful cosmic entity known as the Beyonder, who abducts Earth’s greatest champions and adversaries to clash on a fabricated planet named Battleworld.
Decades later, the 2015 Secret Wars event reshaped the comic landscape by collapsing the core Marvel reality into various colliding alternate dimensions. Engineered by the multiversal Beyonders in the source material, this massive crossover cleverly functioned as a meta-textual mechanism for Marvel to consolidate fragmented continuities into a single, cohesive universe.

If Avengers: Secret Wars honors the narrative arc of the classic comics, a temporal displacement could easily take place while the heroes operate away from Earth. However, Jonathan Hickman’s celebrated 2015 run serves as a far more probable blueprint. Avengers: Doomsday is already laying the groundwork for catastrophic multiversal incursions—a core component of Hickman’s narrative—making Secret Wars a natural continuation.
Within the 2015 comic event, Doctor Doom reshapes the remnants of the multiverse into a fabricated domain called Battleworld, ruling supreme as an omnipotent deity. Should the MCU adapt this storyline, Doom’s redesigned reality could effortlessly feature an aged-up iteration of Toussaint, even if the precise motivation behind altering the young prince’s age remains unclear. Alternatively, the studio could simply lean into another classic time jump akin to the aftermath of Endgame, though relying on that narrative device twice risks feeling somewhat derivative.

Real-world pragmatism drives Marvel’s creative direction
Yet, while internal story mechanics might appear convoluted at a glance, the real-world incentives are remarkably clear-cut. Just as the 2015 Secret Wars resolved complex comic book continuity issues by simplifying a sprawling multiverse into a single narrative stream, accelerating Toussaint’s aging process neatly untangles several logistical headaches for Marvel Studios. Out of profound respect for Chadwick Boseman, the studio opted against recasting T’Challa directly, but this decision left a noticeable void that many enthusiasts frequently vocalize. Furthermore, Marvel appears hesitant to position Letitia Wright as the permanent face of the franchise. Although Wakanda Forever triumphed at the box office, Wright faced considerable backlash for sharing controversial views regarding vaccinations on social media during the global pandemic—reports indicating she continued discussing these topics on set only added to the friction. Ultimately, public enthusiasm surrounding Wright’s iteration of the mantle has never quite mirrored the monumental adoration commanded by Boseman.
Sitting in the theater during the final moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sudden introduction of T’Challa’s secret offspring struck me as an intriguing pivot. When the boy disclosed his true name, it became instantly evident that Marvel Studios was establishing a long-term contingency plan to transition the title away from Wright and pass it down to a new generation.
Now, those initial assumptions have crystallized into reality. Come 2028, audiences will witness an adult Toussaint stepping into his birthright as the legendary protector of Wakanda. How the cinematic universe handles the arithmetic of his accelerated aging remains to be uncovered, but rest assured that Kevin Feige and his creative team have likely mapped out a comprehensive strategy well in advance.
