Video game remakes frequently invite the skeptical question: Was this actually necessary? Following a fresh batch of clips shared by Ubisoft on Tuesday, the case for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is becoming increasingly convincing.

After circulating through the rumor mill for years, Black Flag Resynced—a top-to-bottom reconstruction of the 2013 classic Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag—was officially confirmed by Ubisoft in March. Set during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 1700s, this reimagining aims to do more than just polish the visuals; it seeks to modernize some of the original game’s more antiquated design choices, finally eliminating those tedious tailing missions.

Based on the latest footage, however, the most significant contribution of Black Flag Resynced appears to be a shift back toward the series’ roots. Assassin’s Creed history is generally divided into two distinct schools: the focused stealth-action titles spanning 2007–2015, and the sprawling open-world RPGs released from 2017 onward. While both have their proponents, it is evident that Resynced prioritizes the rhythmic, mechanical feel of the earlier entries over the stat-heavy, health-bar-focused combat prevalent in recent installments.

In two separate clips, protagonist Edward Kenway engages groups of enemies, dispatching them with brutal efficiency in just a strike or two—no inflated health bars in sight. For veteran players, this combat—seamlessly blending the hidden blade with Kenway’s signature rope dart—will immediately evoke the classic era of the franchise. Exhibit A:

And Exhibit B:

In an accompanying blog post, Ubisoft highlighted their commitment to maintaining the “responsive movement” of the original title while implementing refinements to boost overall momentum. Features like a landing roll ensure players maintain speed when jumping from heights, and a subtle speed burst upon mantling helps keep the traversal feeling snappy. Additionally, new ziplines have been integrated into urban areas to enhance verticality.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is slated for release on July 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.
